{"id":50,"date":"2015-08-20T12:32:42","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T12:32:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rigel.org.uk\/astromeg\/?p=50"},"modified":"2015-08-20T12:32:42","modified_gmt":"2015-08-20T12:32:42","slug":"solarsphere-two-festivals-in-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rigel.org.uk\/astromeg\/gigs\/solarsphere-two-festivals-in-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Solarsphere: two festivals in one"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last weekend saw the first <a href=\"http:\/\/solarsphere.events\/\">Solarsphere festival<\/a>, an extravaganza of music and astronomy hosted at Penmaenau Farm in Builth Wells, Wales.\u00a0 And what a weekend it was!\u00a0 The farm is well set up for hosting small festivals, with indoor stages, onsite catering, including a bar, and plenty of camping space.\u00a0 Even the ablutions were pretty good, by festival standards!\u00a0 Being the first, it was a bit of an experiment, but even so it attracted over 500 people, including many families, music fans, and a crowd of amateur astronomers.<\/p>\n<p>With two stages, the entertainment was pretty evenly split across the two themes of the festival: one stage hosted the live music, the other was set up for talks on astronomy.\u00a0 The festival programme was arranged so that the music and talks did not overlap, so you could listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.devonbird.co.uk\/\">Devonbird<\/a> in one barn and then head over to the over stage to listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Zarnecki\">Prof John Zarnecki<\/a> talk about visiting the planets with spacecraft!<\/p>\n<p>The music was excellent.\u00a0 Particular favourites of mine were <a href=\"http:\/\/mistysbigadventure.com\/\">Misty&#8217;s Big Adventure<\/a> (suggested by <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.physics.ox.ac.uk\/contacts\/people\/lintott\">Chris Lintott<\/a> apparently), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3daftmonkeys.co.uk\/\">3 Daft Monkeys<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehigherplanes.com\/\">The Higher Planes<\/a>.\u00a0 There were some really good astronomy talks as well, covering all kinds of subjects at an introductory level.\u00a0 I gave a talk on Sunday, and felt slightly awed to be on the same bill as <a href=\"http:\/\/luciegreen.com\/\">Lucie Green<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/jcz2\">John Zarnecki<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/willgater.com\/\">Will Gater<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Around the site there were plenty of other things going on.\u00a0 The top camping field was set aside for night-time observing (and so restricted to red torches only!), with many people bringing their own equipment and happily showing other campers interesting celestial objects.\u00a0 We were fantastically lucky with the weather; having had torrential downpours across half the country on Thursday\/Friday, it cleared up beautifully and we had three lovely clear nights for stargazing and Perseid-spotting.<\/p>\n<p>There was also the Cosmos Planetarium, stands from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popastro.com\/\">SPA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/astrocymru.org.uk\/\">AstroCymru<\/a>, custom t-shirt printing from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murgens-keep.co.uk\/\">Murgens Keep<\/a>, rocketry workshops, solar observing, space art, face painting&#8230;
